There’s no better place to be played by the weather than here in the San Juans. If you’re looking to sprint down below treeline and get caught in cold rain actively turning to pelting bits of ice with wind that finds its way through your gore-tex shell then look no further. Luckily, town is just down below and you brought just enough layers to pretend you almost didn’t get caught in a bad situation. All I can provide to you is trusting the weather app on your phone is worthless and so is trying to predict what will happen when you are finishing you coffee at Bruno and itching for a long walk. In shoulder season you just have to be confident in your decisions and know when to run back with your tail between your legs. Oh and make sure to try it again tomorrow because the sun will definitely be out.
Good things only come if you are willing to take chances and the leave the door open. That was more or less my trip out to Telluride this September. Drive the Land Cruiser out just in time to pick up the new car, register it, spend a week or two in Telluride with Catherine and the roomates all to drive back to STL in the Lexus. With plans to return in the winter.
